Orjan Nyland departs Aston Villa
Goalkeeper Orjan Nyland was the lone departure on an otherwise quiet deadline day at Villa.
The Norway international reached an agreement with the club to terminate his contract, which had been due to expire next year, leaving him free to move outside of the transfer window.
Any further incomings at Villa Park were dependent on moving other players on but the club struggled to find takers in a market hit hard by the pandemic.
Werder Bremen forward Milot Rashica, who was targeted by Villa earlier in the window, saw a deadline day switch to Bayern Leverkusen break down at the last minute.
Villa have the option of buying or selling players to clubs in the EFL until October 16.
Nyland joined Jota in having his contract ended early by Villa and departed having made 36 appearances in all competitions since joining from FC Ingolstadt in August 2018.
His time at the club will be best remembered for a stunning performance in last season’s Carabao Cup semi-final win over Leicester City, along with the infamous “ghost goal” incident against Sheffield United back in June.
Goalline technology failed to register Nyland carrying the ball over his own line in a match which finished 0-0, earning Villa a point which would eventually prove vital to them avoiding relegation.
Nyland posted a message on Instagram after news of his departure emerged.
It read: "I would like to thank Aston Villa for fulfilling my boyhood dream of playing in the Premier League.
"Together we have shared great memories I will remember for the rest of my life, helping the club back to the where it belongs, staying up and a cup final at Wembley.
"A special mention to all the supporters for the amazing support throughout my time here. Best of luck for the rest of the season."
