Dean Smith has switched his sights elsewhere after missing out on Callum Wilson to Newcastle and Brewster is among the targets under consideration.

The 20-year-old was tracked by Villa in January before joining Swansea on loan, where he scored 11 goals to help the Welsh club into Championship play-offs.

Brewster has been involved with Liverpool’s first-team during pre-season but there is an increasing expectation he will be allowed to move before October 5, either on loan or even in a permanent deal.

Crystal Palace and Sheffield United are among the other clubs interested in the England under-21 international.

Villa’s main focus is on bolstering their firepower but their efforts have so far been met with frustration, with negotiations over a move for Brentford’s Ollie Watkins proving tricky and Wilson choosing a move to the north-east over the Midlands.

The 28-year-old’s £20million switch from Bournemouth was confirmed yesterday morning.

“I wouldn’t say it was an easy decision,” Wilson explained. “Villa is back home for me, I looked at both of the squads, and I feel like I can fit into this team nicely.”
