James Chester departs Aston Villa for Stoke City
Aston Villa have confirmed James Chester's departure, with the former captain signing for Stoke City on a permanent deal.
Chester spent a portion of last season on-loan at the club, and has penned an initial one-year deal with the Potters.
The 31-year-old was a fan favourite at B6 having joined Villa in 2016. He totalled 126 appearances in claret and blue, scoring 11 goals.
He memorably played through the pain barrier during Villa's promotion campaign with the club desperately short in defence, an injury which he admitted 'damaged his body indefinitely'.
Following the club's promotion, Chester found himself behind the likes of Tyrone Mings, Ezri Konsa, Kortney Hause and Bjorn Engels in the pecking order - pushing him to secure a loan move away during the January window.
His final appearance for Villa came against Fulham in the FA Cup.
Stoke City boss Michael O'Neill admitted he was delighted to welcome the former Villa skipper to the BET365 Stadium on a permanent basis.
"James brings vast experience to our squad and he has already shown himself to be a massive influence, both in and around the training ground and in matches." he said.
"It’s no coincidence that in the 13 games he started after joining us on loan from Villa we claimed 24 points and I’m delighted to have him on board."
