Tyrone Mings: No easing off now for Aston Villa

Tyrone Mings has warned Villa against letting complacency derail their surge toward Premier League survival.

Villa travel to West Ham on Sunday aiming to complete a remarkable escape from relegation after erasing a seven-point gap to safety in the space of just three matches.

Dean Smith’s men have momentum following Tuesday’s 1-0 win over Arsenal, which lifted them out of the bottom three for the first time since February.

But with Watford still only beneath them on goal difference and Bournemouth still within striking distance, England international Mings has stressed the job is not finished yet.

He said: “We are nowhere near out of the woods yet, but we have given ourselves a good chance.

“We have to go and replicate Tuesday’s performance at the weekend because complacency can be a killer, and we still have a huge task.

“Tuesday night means nothing if we don’t finish the job at the weekend.”

Victory at the London Stadium would likely be enough to guarantee Villa’s survival but the margins for error are tight and they need to at least match the result of Watford, who travel to Arsenal.

But if both they and the Hornets lose, Bournemouth can still climb out of the bottom three if they win at Everton. Villa’s game will be broadcast live on BT Sport.

Smith hailed Tuesday’s win as Villa’s joint biggest of the season, along with their first victory of the campaign over Everton last August.

“I have said since the season resumed our performance levels have been better,” he said. “Defensively we look solid and we have limited some good teams to very few chances.

“We are doing something right and hopefully we can go and do it one more time against West Ham.”

Villa are assessing the fitness of full-backs Ahmed Elmohamady and Neil Taylor, both of whom are struggling with hamstring injuries.
