Dwight Yorke: Diversity a problem in coaching
Former Villa striker Dwight Yorke has hit out at the ‘injustice’ he believes black players face when they try to move into management.
Yorke claims to have never been given an interview for any of the roles he has applied for despite holding all the necessary coaching badges and blasted the Rooney Rule, which dictates every club must interview at least one BAME candidate, as an ‘absolute joke’.
England forward Raheem Sterling this week questioned the lack of black managers and coaches in the game and Yorke said: “This has been a problem for years.
“I’ve lived the life of understanding of being a professional footballer, you work so hard and that is in your control.
“But when the control is in the reverse situation, you understand why you can’t get jobs in football. It’s an injustice.
“When a black person has gone for any type of job they’re not seen as adequate or qualified enough, even though they have the qualifications.”
