Garry Thompson: Mbwana Samatta could be Aston Villa saviour

Villa hero Garry Thompson reckons new boy Mbwana Samatta has the potential to fire the club to Premier League safety.

January arrival Samatta, signed following the season-ending knee injury suffered by record buy Wesley, got off the mark in last weekend’s 2-1 defeat at Bournemouth, his first top flight start.

The Tanzania international striker has a major role to play for Dean Smith’s side, particularly with Villa having fresh injury concerns over Keinan Davis.

Deadline day signing Borja Baston is the only other senior striker on the club’s books.

Former Villa striker Thompson said: “There is a lot of pressure on him (Samatta) but from what I have seen so far he has the potential to score goals in the Premier League.

“He’s shown a few nice touches, his movement is good. His fitness isn’t quite there at the moment but that should improve. Scoring at Bournemouth will have given him confidence.”
