John McGinn: I’ll be back for Aston Villa in five or six weeks

Aston Villa talisman John McGinn has cast doubt on whether he will return in time for the Carabao Cup final at Wembley in just over three weeks.

It had been hoped the midfield dynamo, who is recovering from a broken ankle suffered in the defeat to Southampton on December 21, could return for the final after boss Dean Smith said the Scot would be targeting the March 1 showpiece.

However, at a meeting with Villa fan Prince William for the FA’s Heads Together mental health campaign in London yesterday, McGinn hinted he could be out for longer. Asked by the prince when he would return for the claret and blues, McGinn said: “About five to six weeks, I’ll be back.”

That could mean he is out until Villa’s home clash with Chelsea on March 14 or the following weekend’s trip to Newcastle.

Meanwhile, Villa starlet Jacob Ramsey has described his debut on loan at Doncaster Rovers as ‘amazing’ after the midfielder netting a brace against Tranmere Rovers.

The Great Barr-born 18-year-old helped former Baggies boss Darren Moore’s side to a 3-0 win.

“It was pretty amazing to be fair,” Ramsay said.

“I think I should have scored a hat-trick, but I got two decent goals. I was disappointed to miss the first chance, but all the lads said to me to keep going, there’s another chance, and at half-time the gaffer said there’s another chance and two came up and I took both of them.

I felt a bit nervous but when you get a touch on the pitch it all goes away.”
