Borja Baston hunger pleases Aston Villa boss Dean Smith

Dean Smith says new signing Borja Baston’s hunger to succeed was a major factor in him being signed by Villa.

The deadline day arrival from Swansea proved a shock to many Villa fans – but could prove a shrewd move following another suspected hamstring injury suffered by striker Keinan Davis in Monday’s night’s under-23 defeat to Albion.

The young striker had only just returned to Villa’s first team after three months out with a similar injury.

However, the signing of 27-year-old Spaniard Baston means Villa at last have much-needed cover in that area having previously lost record signing Wesley to a long-term injury.

“I’m really pleased,” said Smith of the late swoop.

“I told everyone I wanted to get another striker and we’ve brought in Borja who, for me, will be someone who’s really hungry who’ll want to go and prove himself and that’s the type of player we want at the football club – hungry people who want to go on and challenge.”

Baston, who was signed by Swansea for £15million in 2016, has scored six times in 21 appearances in all competitions for Swansea this season.
