Dean Smith: I'll buy Prince William a ticket for the next Aston Villa game!

Dean Smith joked he would be buying Prince William a ticket for Villa’s next match after the future King of England watched Saturday’s 5-1 demolition of Norwich.

William and wife Kate Middleton watched from the stands at Carrow Road as Villa as recorded their biggest Premier League win for more than a decade.

Record signing Wesley scored twice in the first-half, with Jack Grealish, Conor Hourihane and Douglas Luiz netting after the break before Josip Drmic bagged a late consolation for the hosts.

Smith said: “I've been told he (William) was here, I'll have to get him a ticket for the next game as well!

“It's great to have supporters like that. It's given everyone a boost.

“Have I met him? This is our future King we're talking about!

“He's been to a few games. That's my first league game he's been to, obviously he was at the play-off final.”

The victory was just Villa’s second of the season and their first on the road in the top flight since August, 2015. It was their biggest away win in the Premier League since a 6-0 victory at Derby in April, 2008 and came after a frustrating few weeks, which had seen them throw away leads against both Arsenal and Burnley.

Smith said: “Our performances have been there. That result today is probably what we've deserved in the last few weeks. It's one game at a time like we've always said.

“It's certainly been a long time for them fans, it's good to them to send them home smiling. “Our performances already on the road - with the exception of Crystal Palace - have been good.

“We'll go into each game - whether it's home or away - wanting to win. We know when we've got 39,000 Villa fans behind you it certainly helps but, to come here today, will give the lads an awful lot of confidence.”

Smith also reserved praise for Wesley, who bounced back impressively from a disappointing display in the previous week’s 2-2 draw with Burnley.

The £22million summer signing also saw a first-half penalty saved by Norwich keeper Michael McGovern.

“It was a good performance from him, he could have got a hat-trick with the penalty,” said Smith. “He's a young player, 22, he's come all the way from Brazil, he's a long way from his family, he's played in Belgium and Slovakia but now he's in the Premier League and he has a big price tag on his shoulders.

“He didn't play that well last week and, today, I've seen him put a performance we know he's capable of. The big thing for me is there's big room for improvement and he can get better.”
