Dean Smith 'disappointed and frustrated' with Aston Villa draw

Dean Smith expressed frustration after Villa again threw away a winning position to draw 2-2 with Burnley.

Goals from Anwar El Ghazi and John McGinn twice saw Villa lead against the Clarets.

But twice they were pegged back, with former Albion duo Jay Rodriguez and Chris Wood both netting to earn Sean Dyche’s team a share of the spoils.

It was the second time in a week Villa had led twice in a game and failed to claim victory, following last Sunday’s 3-2 defeat at Arsenal.

Smith’s men have now won only one of their opening seven Premier League games and remain in the bottom three.

The boss said: “I'm a little bit disappointed and frustrated because the first half was as good as we've played all season, such was the domination.

“Burnley can be a very tough team to play against, they get it to their front two very well, get it wide and get crosses into the box, we dealt with it really well.

“We played Jack higher and John McGinn's had a headed chance, El Ghazi's had one, we scored a goal and looked good.

“Nobody would have argued had we gone in at two or three-nil up at half time.

“Burnley will go home with what they came for, you seen that with how long they were taking with goal kicks.

“The game was going to be a stop-start with their rhythm. If it was one team who were going to win it, it was going to be us. It's three points we deserved today. We need to kick on.”

McGinn had already seen a goal ruled out by VAR before El Ghazi put Villa in front on 33 minutes.

But the hosts failed to extend their lead and were pegged back when Rodriguez headed home midway through the second half.

McGinn then netted his third of the season to put Villa back ahead, only for Wood to level things up again less than two minutes later.

“I felt aggrieved with their first goal. Nakamba, who I thought was excellent, it's come off a Burnley lad's heel and the referee gave a throw-in for them.

“I thought it was a foul, Wood on Taylor and they get a free-kick and launch it 50 yards and we didn't deal with the cross.

“I thought our response was good. McGinn scored a deserved goal. He was outstanding today.

“The second goal was a lapse in concentration. We didn't get tight enough and we didn't stop the cross.”
