Dean Smith’s men have endured a testing first month back in the top flight since winning promotion, losing three of their opening four matches.

But Mings, currently away on international duty with England, is confident the long-term picture remains bright.

He said: “I think we are building something really special down there. It just takes a little time to gel.”

Mings continued: “At the moment, we don’t know what that end goal is so we have to kind of shorten that until we’re a bit more of an established team in the Premier League and then we can maybe re-set our goals.

“Until then we have to be realistic in our goals and just try and win every game and see where we end up at the end of the season.”

Mings, a key figure in Villa’s promotion, was hoping to earn his first Three Lions cap this evening when Gareth Southgate’s men took on Bulgaria at Wembley in a Euro 2020 qualifier.

The 26-year-old was called up after just three appearances back in the top flight and said: “I have felt comfortable enough at Villa to make the transition from Championship to Premier League, with all the help I have had.”
