Former Aston Villa defender Micah Richards calls time on playing days
Micah Richards has opened up on his Villa frustration after confirming his retirement.
The 31-year-old was always expected to hang up his boots after his four-year contract at Villa Park ended last month.
Richards had not made a first-team appearance since October, 2016 due to chronic knee problems.
The former Manchester City and England star endured a fractious relationship with supporters, having skippered the team relegated from the Premier League during the 2015/16 season.
Announcing his retirement with a statement on City’s website, Richards explained how his career had been derailed by injury.
“My time at Villa was very frustrating because I wanted to play but my knee would swell up so I could not even train,” he said.
“But it was still an honour to play for them, and I am just sorry I could not do more for them on the pitch.”
Richards is set to combine punditry work with a promotional role at City, where he made 295 appearances.
He remains the youngest ever defender to be capped by England, having made his debut at the age of 18.
