Villa are preparing for a return to the top flight after winning promotion through the play-offs, with McGinn having played a starring role.

The Scot scooped both players’ player and supporters’ player of the season awards to cap a stellar first campaign in English football, following a £2.75million move from Hibernian last summer.

But he knows both he and the rest of Villa’s squad will need to go up another level next term.

“I think I know and everyone knows in the squad that they need to up their game as well to go and prove that we can be Premier League players,” he said.

“I think we need to be realistic but have some ambitions to make an impact.

“You see certain teams come in, they change a little or they change a lot. Some of them do well, some go down.

“We’re hoping to emulate Wolves and what they managed to do. But then at the same time we need to be realistic and know how difficult the jump up is.”
