Billy McNeill: Former Celtic legend and Aston Villa manager dies aged 79

Celtic legend and former Villa manager Billy McNeill has died at the age of 79, the Scottish club have announced.

McNeill captained the Hoops when they beat Inter Milan to win the European Cup in 1967, becoming the first British player to lift the trophy.

He also won four Scottish titles and four cups during two spells as manager at Parkhead.

McNeill enjoyed less successful stints in management south of the border at both Manchester City and Villa.

The latter lasted just eight months and ended in the club’s relegation to the Second Division in May 1987. His tenure was, at the time, the shortest of any manager in Villa’s history.

McNeill had suffered with dementia since 2010 and had been unable to speak during his final years.

A Celtic statement read: “It is with great sadness that we announce the death of our father Billy McNeill.

“He passed away late last night (Monday, April 22) surrounded by his family and loved ones.

“He suffered from Dementia for a number of years and fought bravely to the end, showing the strength and fortitude he always has done throughout his life.”
