Jed Steer has warned Villa not to take their foot off the gas after Saturday’s dramatic win at Sheffield Wednesday continued their Championship surge.

Stoppage time goals from Albert Adomah and Tammy Abraham earned Villa a 3-1 victory over former boss Steve Bruce’s Owls, which lifted them back to fifth in the table and strengthened their hold on a play-off position.

Villa, who have now won six on the spin, next head to relegation-threatened Rotherham on Wednesday, before hosting Bristol City - one of their main rivals for a top six finish - on Saturday.

Steer, one of the heroes from the win at Hillsborough after saving Steven Fletcher’s second half penalty, has promised players aren’t getting carried away.

“As soon as you start thinking like that, like you are invincible, things go wrong. It is the wrong attitude,” he said.

“As a team we did not perform as we know we can do at Sheffield Wednesday. There are always things you can get better at and we will be straight on the training pitch to iron things out and focus on where we could have done better.”

Wednesday’s opponents Rotherham currently sit in the relegation zone but on Saturday claimed a 2-1 win over Nottingham Forest, another team with play-off aspirations.

And Steer warned: “There are no gimmes in this division. We know we have to go there and win.

“We know it is expected but we expect to beat anyone in this division. It is down to us to do that.

“There are six games to go and we are gradually ticking them off. Let's keep performing and keep winning.

“It is an old cliche to say take every game as it comes but if you start looking ahead and don't pick up the results you can quickly fall down the table.

“Let's just look at Rotherham and make sure we go there, put in a performance and get the three points.”

Steer saved Fletcher’s spot-kick after John McGinn cancelled out Gary Hooper’s opener at Hillsborough, before below-par Villa snatched victory late on.

The keeper added: “Wednesday were the better side. But to come to a place like this, be under the cosh and still win is great. What is important at this stage of the season is to get the points.”
