Aston Villa hero Jed Steer reveals the secret behind crucial Sheffield Wednesday penalty save

Steer prevented the Owls from taking the lead when he dived to his left to kept out Steven Fletcher’s 57th minute penalty with the scores level at 1-1 at Hillsborough.

Villa then went on to snatch victory, their sixth on the spin, thanks to stoppage time goals from Albert Adomah and Tammy Abraham.

Steer explained how his stop was no fluke and owed much to the meticulous preparation carried out by Cuter and his goalkeeping unit.

He said: “We had done our homework heading into the game. We all have a meeting and look at potential penalty takers, where they tend to like going.

“We decided he (Fletcher) likes going that way. Thankfully for us he did and I managed to get a hand on it.”

Asked if he had received any signal from the bench, prior to the penalty being taken, Steer replied: “It depends whether you have a good memory or not! You sit and watch the video and go 'yep, he will put it that way' and then you get out on the pitch and you've forgotten!

“I’d remembered what was said prior to the game if Fletcher was going to take it.

“I looked over to Neil just to make sure and he pointed a little finger which way he thought it might go! Thankfully for us we guessed right. But it was a group decision.”

Cutler, who previously worked on Dean Smith’s coaching team at Walsall, linked up with Villa last November after a brief spell at Albion.

Steer, currently enjoying his longest run in the first-team, believes he has had a major impact.

“It's been brilliant,” he said. “There have been fine details we have touched on and I think I speak for all the goalkeepers at the club when I say we have all improved.

“Every day we go onto the training pitch wanting to improve and get to the next level to help the team. It has been really good.”

He added: “Since I have had the shirt I have wanted to keep it. I am desperate to take this opportunity the manager has given me.”
