John McGinn gives Dean Smith a big an Aston Villa headache

Villa boss Dean Smith has admitted to facing a major midfield selection headache ahead of Sunday’s Second City derby.

Smith has John McGinn available for the trip to St Andrew’s with the fans’ favourite having completed a two-game ban.

But McGinn is by no means guaranteed an automatic return to the starting line-up thanks to the form of Conor Hourihane, Glenn Whelan and Jack Grealish.

All three starred as Villa thumped Derby 4-0 last Saturday to record their biggest win of the season to date.

And Smith said: “At half-time on Saturday we were in coaches’ room looking at clips to show the players.

“We watched the second goal and I said: ‘Bloody hell, it is going to be hard to get John McGinn in this team!’ It’s nice to have that problem. We haven’t had that enough.”
