Elphick left the field on a stretcher 65 minutes into the game, after appearing to go over on his ankle while stretching for a pass.

The 31-year-old had started Villa’s last 10 Championship games, after returning from a loan spell at Hull.

Boss Dean Smith said: “Tommy’s got an ankle injury, I believe. It didn’t look good when he went full stretch for the ball. We’ll have the scan in the next 24 hours.”

Elphick joins a lengthy Villa injury list which also includes skipper James Chester and Alan Hutton.

Smith was at least boosted by the return to fitness of Jack Grealish and Tom Carroll for Saturday’s game.

The former, who captained the team for the first-time, scored a stunning goal to cap Villa’s biggest win of the season.

Carroll, meanwhile, played the final 20 minutes as a substitute, in what was his first action for a month.
