Aston Villa in talks to sign Croatia goalkeeper Lovre Kalinic

Villa are in talks to sign Croatia international Lovre Kalinic – nearly three years after their first attempt to land the goalkeeper fell through.

The imposing Kalinic, who stands 6ft 8in tall, currently plays for Belgian outfit FC Gent having started his senior career at Hajduk Split.

Villa first tried to sign him during their ill-fated 2015-16 Premier League but were denied a work permit.

But a move could now happen in the January transfer window, with Kalinic understood to have been in Birmingham on Wednesday for talks over a possible switch.

Should he join, Kalinic would become Villa's third goalkeeper signing in the space of less than six months.

But on loan Spanish shot-stopper Andre Moreira has barely featured, while current No.1 Orjan Nyland has struggled for consistency following a £1million move from FC Ingolstadt.

Kalinic would represent an improvement for a Villa team still in the thick of the Championship promotion race.

The 28-year-old has 14 caps for Croatia and was on the bench for the World Cup semi-final in Russia when England were defeated and also for Croatia’s losing final against France.
