Villa host the Trotters eager for a return to winning ways after back-to-back defeats saw them slip to 16th in the Championship.

The fixture is just Smith’s second at Villa Park since his appointment as the club’s head coach last month.

His first game in charge saw Villa beat Swansea 1-0 and Smith said:

"You can’t underestimate the importance of the fans in getting the team over the line."

“They drive you forward when you’re struggling and they power you on when you’re winning. They are vital.

“I was certainly left with an impression in my head about what the fans can do when the place is packed.

“The players were talking about it in the dressing room after the game, too. They loved the atmosphere and I want that again and again here at Villa Park.

“Bolton are next up and I’d urge the fans to come and back us again. They’re so vital. They are our catalyst in every moment of the match. They can mean the difference between victory and defeat.”

Villa are assessing the fitness of midfielder Birkir Bjarnason after the Iceland international was forced off with a groin injury during last week’s 1-0 defeat at QPR.
