Steve Bruce: I will battle on at Aston Villa

Under-fire Villa boss Steve Bruce has vowed to battle on despite many fans wanting him to be sacked - and one throwing a cabbage at him.

Villa looked to be coasting to victory against Championship basement boys Preston but would have lost had it not been for Yannick Bolasie's late leveller.

Glenn Whelan could have actually won it right at the death but missed his penalty on a night where there was a sending-off, six goals, and the vegetable being aimed at Bruce before the clash started.

On if he can bounce back from the disappointing draw, the Villa chief said: "That's for others. You need results.

"The one thing I've always had is the determination to roll up my sleeves and get stuck in. I'll always have a go.

"If I think it affects the team and the morale of the team, then of course, overnight...

"That's what I'm up against at the moment. I will battle on. That's always been my philosophy until told otherwise.

"I'll reflect on it, get on with it and roll my sleeves up unless I really think it affects the individuals.

"The players are trying their hardest, that's for sure. They didn't throw in the towel."

On having a cabbage hurled at him, Bruce added: "To say it's disappointing is an understatement for a club like this. Before we had even started.

"It sums up the society we are in at the moment. There's no respect for anyone.

"I find the whole thing hugely disrespectful."

Skipper James Chester gave away a penalty and was sent off as Preston began the fightback.

Bruce felt the decision was a disgrace.

"Obviously, the whole game turns on a decision I've seen five times. It's a harsh pen and a worse sending-off," he said.

"That turns the game. Preston have worked the ball well after scoring the penalty which gave them that impetus of course.

"We're not getting the rub of the green – that's the biggest disappointment at the moment.

"We have been in a cruising situation and the referees have helped them.

"I'm totally disappointed because in my eyes we deserved to win the match. I know that sounds ridiculous with what went on in the second half.

"The double jeopardy rule means you shouldn't be sent off."
