Here we rate the players on the day the club's hopes of automatic promotion were finally extinguished.

Sam Johnstone

Had a rather quiet afternoon. Saved well from Tom Lawrence in the second half, though for a split-second it looked as though the ball might spin over him and into the net. 7/10.

Ahmed Elmohamady

The Egyptian defender well but his crossing when in advanced positions left a lot to be desired. 6/10.

James Chester

The Wales international is just one game away from becoming the first Villa outfield player since 2004 to play every single minute of a league campaign. Another committed performance. 7/10.

John Terry

Having looked a little off the pace prior to his recent injury, the skipper was back to near his best here. Has a huge part to play in the weeks ahead. 8/10.

Neil Taylor

Had a horrible 23 minutes before going off injured. Was at fault for Derby’s goal and generally looked off the pace. 4/10.

Glenn Whelan

The midfielder has been one of Villa’s best performers in recent weeks. This was another tidy performance in the middle of the park. 7/10.

Robert Snodgrass

The Scot saw plenty of the ball but was not quite at his best. Set up Kodjia for an effort which hit the post and never stopped working. 6/10.

Jack Grealish

Grew into the game and was Villa’s most creative player in the second half. You do wonder, at times, whether they are starting to depend upon him too much. 7/10.

Conor Hourihane

Played a big part in the equaliser as his shot, saved by Carson, led to the scramble from which Grabban scored. Otherwise, this was a mixed bag of a performance. 6/10.

Albert Adomah

Looked lively on his return to the starting XI and was particularly threatening in the opening half, even if the final ball sometimes let him down. 7/10.

Lewis Grabban

Could have had a hat-trick on another day. Headed over when he should have scored early on, before then striking the bar. Kept working and got the goal his effort deserved. 8/10.

Star Man

Alan Hutton (for Taylor, 23 mins)

Helped galvanise Villa with his energy and confidence down the left. Made at least two key blocks in the second half and made a nuisance of himself in attacking positions. 8/10.

Other subs

Jonathan Kodjia (for Adomah, 58 mins)

His sixth appearance since returning from injury and arguably the most encouraging yet. Hit the post with a header. 7/10.

Josh Onomah (for Whelan, 81 mins)

A menacing cameo.
