We rate the players following a frustrating night at the KCOM Stadium.

Sam Johnstone

Made the game’s only serious save of note when he tipped over Angus MacDonald’s strike. Showed steady handling as ever. 7/10.

Axel Tuanzebe

Linked up well with Snodgrass in the first-half but lost his way badly after the break, as his performance became wracked with indecision. A useful lesson. 5/10.

John Terry

Villa’s skipper was typically composed and usually around to mop up any danger, on a day when the team’s defence was not the problem. 7/10.

Alan Hutton

Provided Villa with some added drive down the left and denied Abel Hernandez in the second period with a superb interception. Blotted his copybook with a needless dive. 7/10.

Mile Jedinak

The Australian was steady enough during the first-half but quickly faded after the break. Failed to provide Villa with the required momentum. 5/10.

Robert Snodgrass

The Scot didn’t let persistent boos from the home supporters get in his way as he provided Villa with their most consistent attacking threat. 6/10.

Henri Lansbury

Enjoyed a busy first-half on his first start since December. Far quieter after the break and may not have done enough to keep his place. 5/10.

Jack Grealish

The man who typically pulls the strings for Villa is experiencing a sticky patch. Fortunate not to give away a penalty in the second half. 5/10.

Albert Adomah

A real off-day for Villa’s top scorer, who on usual form might have finished the day with at least a couple of goals. His early miss proved costly. 5/10.

Lewis Grabban

Held the ball up well in the first-half and was a key figure in many of Villa’s best attacks. Was far less prominent in the second period. 5/10.

STAR MAN

James Chester

The only returning player to be cheered by the Hull support, Chester enjoyed a fine game. Made several key tackles and interceptions to ensure Villa at least came away with something to show for their effort. 7/10.

Substitutes

Jonathan Kodjia (for Jedinak, 62 mins)

Looked strong but could not deliver the impact his manager would have hoped. 5/10.

Ahmed Elmohamady (for Tuanzebe, 75)

Provided some stability to Villa’s defence. 6/10.

Scott Hogan (for Adomah, 83)

A quiet cameo.
