Chester was part of the Wales squad which ventured 7,000 miles east to Nanjing, eight hours ahead of the UK, during the international break.

But players were kept to a four hour time difference to ensure they remained fresh as possible for the return home.

Villa travel to Chester's former club Hull on Saturday aiming for a win to keep their slender hopes of automatic promotion alive.

“It’s been a bit strange staying up till half three, four in the morning, and having your breakfast at one in the afternoon,” said Chester.

“But it was for that reason, to make sure when we get home it’s not as difficult to get back to normal life.

“It was a very long time ago when I last stayed up that late, and it certainly won’t be a regular thing.

“It has been strange. But it will make it a lot easier getting back. Some of us have got massive games coming up.”

Chester and the rest of the Wales squad returned home on Tuesday, having lost 1-0 to Uruguay in the final of the China Cup.

The 29-year-old has been an integral part of Villa’s challenge near the top of the Championship this season, playing every single minute of the league campaign.
