The Republic of Ireland international lit up Sunday’s clash with a superb 25-yard half-volley which helped Villa secure a 2-0 triumph over rivals Blues.

Hourihane, from County Cork, admitted his parents would likely be buying up copies of the game once they become available in the club shop.

“My mom and dad will, definitely, you can be sure of that,” he said. “They have got every little scrap of everything from any piece or games I’ve played in. It is fantastic, a good feeling.

“It was a fantastic moment. I work hard every day to try and score goals, though not always those kind of goals! It just fell for me. It was one of those where I just wanted to put my boot through it. I connected with it well and it was just a fantastic feeling when it went in. It is right up there – a huge derby, a full house, an electric atmosphere. It was a special feeling.”

Hourihane fired home to seal a seventh straight league win for Villa, after Albert Adomah had earlier broken the deadlock.

“Going into the game we were in good form but that often goes out of the window in a derby,” he said. “We wanted to put on a good performance to beat the arch rivals. It was a fantastic day all round because that is what we did.

“We felt at half-time we should have been winning. In the second half we stuck at it and got our rewards.

“We probably just took our chances when they came. We nullified Birmingham to very little. I thought it was a good performance for everyone. We played with heart and passion.”
