Neil Taylor: It would be massive for Aston Villa to keep Sam Johnstone

Aston Villa defender Neil Taylor believes it would be ‘massive’ to keep hold of Sam Johnstone beyond his current loan deal.

The Wales full-back has been full of praise for the on-loan Manchester United shot-stopper who has been pivotal in Villa’s rise up the table during their current six-game winning run.

Villa boss Steve Bruce spoke last week of wanting to make Johnstone the claret and blues’ No.1 for the next five years.

And asked how important it would be to hang on to the 24-year-old keeper, Taylor said: “For Villa it would be a massive thing.

“For us as players we’re enjoying having him with us from Manchester United.

“There’s a reason he’s been kept by that football club for many years – he’s a keeper with great potential and it’s now not only potential, he’s now producing it.

“He’s a classic case of a young lad having had faith shown in him and showing what he can do.

“Long may that continue with us and I’m sure he will be hoping for a successful season here.

“If we can keep him beyond that then that obviously makes sense.”

Taylor also paid tribute to boss Bruce, who is currently mourning the loss of his father, who died on Tuesday a week after his mother was taken seriously ill.

“He’s a really good manager. He’s one of those honest British managers who I highly think of and I think it’s great to work underneath him,” added Taylor
