The Yorkshire club unveiled the new crest, which is to mark their centenary and will be used from the start of next season, on Wednesday afternoon.

But the design has been met with widespread derision and anger among supporters, with some claiming it resembles the fake unlicensed badges used on popular video game Pro Evolution Soccer.

Taking that as inspiration, Villa posted a mock advert for April’s home Championship game with Lilywhites on their official Twitter account.

The message displayed the two clubs alternative names in the game – West Midlands Village and Yorkshire Whites – but supplanting the latter’s pretend badge with the new Leeds design, along with the message, “We can’t wait for this one, LUFC”.

Leeds say that more than 10,000 people were consulted during the process of producing the crest and it "represents the passion and the unique identity that runs deep through the club".

The badge is supposed to depict the “Leeds Salute” which has been used by supporters over several decades.
