The third-round tie against League One Posh has for several weeks been identified by boss Steve Bruce as the ideal return date for Terry, who has spent the last two months out with a broken foot.

Academy stars Callum O’Hare, Jake Doyle-Hayes and Rushian Hepburn-Murphy are also set to feature as Bruce takes the opportunity to rest senior players following the hectic festive schedule.

Villa will also welcome back winger Andre Green for his first action since undergoing surgery on a hamstring injury in September.

“We’ve got some good young players. They’re all good players who could be the future of Aston Villa,” said Bruce. “Well done to the academy for preparing the kids so well.”

Terry has not played since breaking the fifth metatarsal in his right foot during Villa’s 2-1 defeat to Sheffield Wednesday on November 4.
