Terry spent Saturday night in hospital as Villa awaited to hear the extent of the injury the 36-year-old sustained during Saturday’s 2-1 home defeat to Sheffield Wednesday.

Terry was forced off after just 20 minutes at Villa Park and boss Steve Bruce said: “John is in hospital now and it looks as if he has got a broken metatarsal which is bad news for all of us.

“A bad afternoon has got worse with that news. How badly he has broken it, we don't know.

“He will be out for some time.

“He has been immense the last few months. When you analyse it tomorrow, that is when it will really hit us.

“You just hope it is one where he is out for six weeks as opposed to 12 weeks.”

Terry’s injury compounded a nightmare day for Villa, who were beaten on their home turf for the first time this season.

Adam Reach fired Wednesday in front after just 19 seconds, with Jordan Rhodes then doubling the advantage midway through the first-half.

Chris Samba’s consolation with virtually the last kick of the game was the only solace for Villa, who also saw Robert Snodgrass withdrawn late in the first half with broken ribs.

“It couldn't have started any worse and then got worse,” he said. “It was one of those really difficult afternoons.

“They scored two wonderful goals and after that it is always going to be a mountain to climb.

“I took a bit of a gamble on Snodgrass who played with broken ribs and you could just tell he was uneasy and the gamble backfired.

“The loss of key players is obviously critical to all of us going forward, especially your captain and John going forward. That is the industry we are in, you go along nice and it kicks you in the balls.”
