Striker Jonathan Kodjia was already a doubt with the ankle injury which forced him to miss Wednesday’s 2-0 win at Preston.

But boss Steve Bruce also has concerns over attacking midfielder Josh Onomah (groin), while winger Robert Snodgrass has a rib injury.

In a boost, Jack Grealish could make his first appearance of the season after recovering from kidney damage.

Bruce said: “We will see what the next 24 hours bring. We have one or two bumps and bruises.

“The squad will have to be used but that is the Championship, that’s what it is all about.

“The door could be open for Jack if people don’t make it through injury.”

Kodjia picked up an ankle injury in last Sunday’s 0-0 derby draw at Blues and Bruce added: “I would think he is 50-50. We don’t think it is too serious but obviously he has twisted the same ankle he fractured.

“He is a bit wary of it, to say the least. If I was a betting man I would probably bet against it.”

Villa head into the game on a run of just one defeat in 12, which has seen them rise from the bottom three to the top five.

“Momentum is key for the Championship. Can you get a bit of momentum going?” said Bruce.

“Can we go on a run? I do believe the team is now starting to gel.

“I think the players are enjoying the challenge now of playing for the club. Trying to get the club back in the Premier League is what we are all here for.”
