Steve Bruce hoping he's the man to lead Aston Villa for coming years

Steve Bruce says somebody needs to get a grip of Villa ‘for the next three or four years’ – and he hopes that will be him.

Bruce saw his side record a 3-0 victory over Barnsley at Oakwell on Saturday evening – amid speculation the game could have been his last in the Villa hot-seat had the claret and blues lost.

However, a brace from Albert Adomah and Keinan Davis’s first goal for Villa gave them the three points and lifted them to 13th in the table with 10 points from eight games.

That eased the pressure on the Villa boss and Bruce said: “We took our chances, that’s three clean sheets in a row and unbeaten in six.

“We have a nice mixture of youth and experience and things are coming on nicely.

“We have a nice blend and what we have to do now is put the results together and put a run together, which we are capable of doing. Let’s build on this.”

And he added: “Whether it’s me or another manager, someone’s got to run the club for the next three or four years. Whether that’s myself, I hope it is because that’s what it needs, for sure.

“It doesn’t need continual change, because then you get no continuity and that doesn’t help anyone. As I keep saying, I’ve done it before so I’m sure I can do it again.”

Bruce said he believes Villa have the right mix to mount a challenge, adding he hopes the result will calm the ‘mass hysteria’ around Villa’s results. “I hope a result like that calms the whole thing down,” said the boss.

“We have the makings of a very decent team and I think the supporters can see that.”
