The 19-year-old has been blighted by hamstring injuries during the past year and has now had an operation after being forced out of Saturday’s 0-0 draw with Brentford.

Speaking after Villa were held to another goal-less draw by Middlesbrough on Tuesday night, Bruce said: “Green has had an operation. He will be out for a long time, months.

“It’s a bad one. He has done his hamstring three times since I have been here.”

The news is a blow for both Green and Villa, coming at a time when the academy product beginning to play an increasingly significant role in the first-team.

Green scored his first senior goal in last month’s 4-2 win over Norwich and had started the previous four Championship games before Tuesday night’s visit of Boro.

Bruce was at least boosted by the return of last season’s top scorer Jonathan Kodjia, along with midfielder Mile Jedinak.

The latter played the first 45 minutes on Tuesday night before being sacrificed as Bruce made attacking substitutions.

Kodjia then played for the final 20 minutes after coming off the bench, almost bagging the winner when his header was saved by Boro keeper Darren Randolph.
