The 19-year-old was forced off during Saturday’s 0-0 draw with Brentford at Villa Park, having suffered the injury to his right hamstring.

On Tuesday, Green posted a picture from a hospital bed with the message: “Gutted it come (sic) down to this but everything went well with the op.

“Time to work hard and get back out there.”

The news is a significant blow to both Green and Villa, with the academy product having been set to play a major role this season.

Green netted his first senior goal in last month's 4-2 win over Norwich and was cementing his position as a first-team regular.

Boss Steve Bruce has injury concerns over fellow youngsters Keinan Davis (hip) and Josh Onomah (leg) ahead of Tuesday's Championship clash with Middlesbrough at Villa Park.

The boss could however welcome back striker Jonathan Kodjia following his recovery from a broken ankle. Kodjia, top scorer for Villa last season with 19 goals, came through 45 minutes for the club's under-23s on Monday night.
