Aston Villa assess duo ahead of Brentford test
Villa are assessing the fitness of Alan Hutton and Mile Jedinak ahead of Saturday’s home game with Brentford.
Right-back Hutton missed the 1-1 draw at Bristol City prior to the international break with an ankle injury, while Jedinak is yet to feature this season having undergone surgery on a long-standing groin problem during the summer.
The 33-year-old midfielder was close to making a return last month only for illness to delay his recovery.
Jedinak was among Villa’s best performers last season and his return will be a significant boost to boss Steve Bruce, with the veteran Australian international tipped to play a particularly big part in away matches.
Winger Robert Snodgrass is pushing to make his Villa debut against the Bees after joining on a season-long loan from West Ham.
The 29-year-old was the club's final signing of the summer transfer window, though chief executive Keith Wyness has since revealed Villa missed out on two "big-name" Premier League players - thought to be Loic Remy and Jack Wilshere - on deadline day.
"We didn’t get things across the line that we had hoped," said Wyness.
"Overall I am very pleased with our business. We have got the squad balanced. I believe we are in a very good position now to push on."
