Steve Bruce: John Terry will adapt to "hurly-burly" of the Championship

Villa boss Steve Bruce is confident John Terry will get used to the “hurly-burly” of the Championship after hailing the skipper’s off-field impact.

Terry endured a testing evening during last Friday’s 1-1 draw Bristol City and was fortunate not to concede a second half penalty for handball.

It was the latest chapter in a mixed opening month in the second tier for the 36-year-old former Chelsea skipper, which has featured both solid individual performances and occasional moments of uncertainty as Villa have conceded nine goals in their opening five league games.

But Bruce believes Terry’s influence extends far beyond the pitch and remains convinced the five-time Premier League winner will prove his worth.

“John is doing fine. He will get used to the hurly-burly,” said Bruce. “This was never going to be an easy option and I think he realised that when he signed.

“I don’t think he wanted an easy option. He could have taken that and moved abroad. It is not just what he gives on the pitch, it is what he gives off the pitch and the young lads. I have surrounded the young ones with really good pros, which I think was important.

"There has been huge change. Now we need to settle down and work with the squad we have got."
