Colin Calderwood: Keep the Aston Villa goals coming

Tuesday night’s 4-1 Carabao Cup second round win over Wigan followed Saturday’s 4-2 victory over Norwich.

Scott Hogan bagged a confidence-boosting double while Albert Adomah - with a spectacular volley - and Birkir Bjarnason were also on the mark as Villa marched into the third round.

And Calderwood believes the last two performances bode well for the rest of the campaign.

“It’s a percentage that Scott scores,” said Calderwood. “If he misses one chance he’s got to feel the team or him will create another.

“If the last two performances do anything it is putting everyone in that direction.

“That’s another upside of this performance, Scott as a goalscorer getting two goals.

“Throughout the season we’re going to need more goals than we’ve got so far.”

Villa’s success was achieved with a much-changed line-up in which teenagers Jake Doyle-Hayes, Mitch Clark and Callum O’Hare all impressed.

“When you add the youngsters into it, the good performances from them and playing in front of the crowd at Villa Park,” said Calderwood.

“It went our way. We scored first and went two ahead. At the moment they got back into the game we quickly scored to ease any anxiety. That is part and parcel of learning. The young ones will have to learn it can’t always be the perfect performance.

“The goals were terrific, but beyond that, we were creating chances. That is more rewarding than the number of goals. We need to be getting the ball in the box, and exciting the crowd.

“Throughout the season we are going to see far more goals. We have to transfer attitude performance and result to away games.

“We have to find a way to gain results away from home. That will help get us really rolling.”
