Jonathan Kodjia’s Villa return looks likely to be delayed until at least mid-September after the striker experienced further discomfort following his broken ankle.

Last season’s top scorer suffered the break in the final game of the season at Blackburn and hopes had been raised of an earlier-than-expected comeback after he posted videos on social media highlighting his bid to return to fitness.

He had been earmarked for a potential return following the international break in the home clash against Brentford on September 9.

However, Villa boss Steve Bruce said the club would have to wait for further progress after revealing the Ivory Coast star was still suffering pain.

“Kodjia’s a bit different,” said Bruce. “I think we were hoping he would be back maybe after the international break.

“He’s a bit sore at the minute on his fracture side, so we have to be a bit patient with him.”

Meanwhile, midfielder Leandro Bacuna looks close to completing a deal which would take him to Championship rivals Reading.
