The midfielder had always been expected to leave Villa Park this summer and has now signed a four-year deal with the Serie A club. Veretout will be reunited with former Villa team-mate Carlos Sanchez in Italy.

The move brings the curtain down on a difficult two-year spell for the 24-year-old following his move to Villa from Nantes in the summer of 2015.

Regarded as one of the brightest young prospects in the French game, Veretout struggled for form during his first season in England, which ended with Villa’s relegation from the Premier League.

He then spent the whole of last term on loan at St Etienne and for a long time this summer looked destined to make a permanent return to France before a dramatic U-turn in recent days.

Veretout was set to undergo a medical with the French club when Villa agreed a fee but failed to show after learning of Fiorentina’s interest.

His departure is expected to herald the start of significant squad trimming by Villa boss Steve Bruce, with Tommy Elphick, Gary Gardner, Jordan Amavi, Aaron Tshibola and Ross McCormack are among several players expected to leave in the coming weeks.
