Sam Johnstone eyes reaching Premier League with Aston Villa
Sam Johnstone set sights on promotion to the Premier League after finally sealing his return to Villa.
The 24-year-old goalkeeper’s season long-loan move from Manchester United was confirmed on Friday and he is expected to make his pre-season bow in Villa’s friendly at Shrewsbury Town on Saturday afternoon.
Johnstone made 22 appearances while on loan at Villa Park during the second half of last season and now wants to play his part in helping the club back to the Premier League.
“We’ve got a good team, no-one can argue about that,” he said. “I can’t see why we can’t be up there. Hopefully we will be consistent and finish the season going up.
“I want to play as many games as possible and hopefully get promoted with the team. That is everyone’s objective this season.”
Johnstone, who has been handed the No.1 shirt, admitted the promise of regular first-team football was the key factor in his decision to return.
The one-time Walsall loanee was not short of suitors, with Leeds, Middlesbrough and Premier League Watford all thought to be interested in his services.
But the lure of guaranteed regular football meant Villa were always favourites to land their top goalkeeping target.
“There was a lot of talk over the summer and I am glad to be back,” said Johnstone.
“Last season I really enjoyed my time here. I settled in well and it was a very easy decision to come back.
“I couldn’t wait to come back and start playing. Last year when I first came in the games were difficult but I am hoping, having already experienced some time here, that won't be the case this time around.
"We all want to hit the ground running."
