Aston Villa set to enter race for Burnley winger George Boyd
Villa are set to enter the race for George Boyd with the attacking midfielder set to leave Burnley this summer.
The 31-year-old will be a free agent when his contract expires at the end of the month and Villa will consider an approach, having missed out on the Scotland international in January.
Boyd, part of the Clarets team which won promotion to the Premier League in 2016, has rejected the offer of a new one-year contract at Turf Moor and is thought to be attracting interest from a number of clubs in the top two divisions, including Derby.
Villa boss Steve Bruce knows Boyd well having managed him for a season at Hull and is eager to boost his midfield options.
Stoke City’s Glenn Whelan is a prime target, with Villa already seeing a bid of £500,000 for the Republic of Ireland international rejected last week.
Elsewhere, Leeds United have become the latest club to be linked with Manchester United goalkeeper Sam Johnstone, who spent the second half of the season on loan at Villa Park. Midfielder Mile Jedinak, meanwhile, has been withdrawn from Australia’s squad for the Confederations Cup after aggravating a groin injury.
