An opening bid of around £500,000 is thought to have been rejected but Villa are expected to return with an improved offer for the 33-year-old and are confident of completing a deal.

Whelan has been a permanent fixture at the Britannia Stadium for nearly a decade and has racked up more than 300 appearances for the Potters.

But the arrival of Darren Fletcher from Albion on a free transfer is expected to herald his exit and Steve Bruce will offer him the chance to play a key role in getting Villa back to the Premier League.

Bruce is understood to be prioritising players with top flight experience in his effort to transform Villa’s squad into one which can mount a serious challenge for promotion, with a defender and striker near the top of his wishlist.

The manager is also keen to complete a deal for Manchester United goalkeeper Sam Johnstone but is facing competition from several clubs including Leicester and Watford.
