Chief executive Keith Wyness has admitted ‘one or two’ deals could happen ‘pretty quickly’ as Steve Bruce looks to build a squad capable of challenging for promotion next season.

Discussions over a deal which would see Manchester United keeper Sam Johnstone return next season remain ongoing, while reports over the weekend also linked Villa with Hull City wideman Ahmed Elmohamady.

The 29-year-old Egyptian international played under Bruce at both Sunderland and Hull.

Strengthening in wide areas is among the manager’s main aims over the summer, while a centre-half and attacking midfielder are also thought to have been on the list presented to the club’s board earlier this month.

Villa’s need to comply with Financial Fair Play regulations means they must also move a significant number of players off the books but Bruce has been assured his initial targets fall within budget.

Midfielder Mile Jedinak has, meanwhile, hailed the club’s supporters after completing his first season at Villa Park.

The Australian international, signed in a £4million deal from Crystal Palace last summer, said: “People who follow and support this football club are very passionate about this football club and it didn’t take me long to realise that.

“I’m just very grateful that I’ve been given the opportunity to do my thing for them.”
