Aston Villa boss Steve Bruce tells Jack Grealish it is time to deliver

Villa boss Steve Bruce has warned Jack Grealish he must finally start delivering on his potential after the attacker’s late show salvaged a season-ending 1-1 draw with Brighton.

Grealish’s 89th minute strike, which slipped through the hands of Brighton keeper David Stockdale, earned ten man Villa a point and saw the Seagulls miss out on the Championship title.

Glenn Murray’s penalty, after Nathan Baker had brought down Sam Baldock through on goal, looked to have clinched the crown for Chris Hughton’s men, only for Grealish’s goal to see them pipped at the post by Newcastle.

It was the 21-year-old’s fifth goal of a campaign where he has again found himself in and out of the Villa team and Bruce admitted the much lauded academy product must add more consistency to his game.

“We’ve got to see the whole package from Jack,” said the boss. “He’s got a big summer ahead and he’s getting to and age now when we can’t just talk about his talent. He’s got to produce it, week in and week out.

“We all know he can score a goal but really, somebody with Jack’s ability, he should be in double figures and that’s where I stand with that.”

Grealish is set to spend the first part of the summer with England at the European under-21 Championships.

Bruce added: “We’ve been talking about Jack’s development for the last three years. There’s times when you cannot keep talking about development and potential. He’s now played enough games and knows what it is.

“We all know he’s got that in the locker; we saw it only a few weeks ago at Fulham and he’s won us a game against Wigan here, too.

“But there’s always a ‘but’ and he’s got to get rid of that ‘but’. It’s as simple as that.

“It’s a mentality thing. He has to learn with it and grow with it. He’s a local lad here. He’s the local favourite but he has to grasp the situation and produce the real deal and that’s the most important thing for Jack.

“We all know he has ability but ability is not enough alone.”
