The 24-year-old had to be replaced late in the first half of the game at Villa Park after going over on his ankle following a challenge from Steve Sidwell.

Villa boss Steve Bruce believes the injury may be similar to that sustained by Hogan during the 2-0 defeat at Newcastle in February, which forced the 24-year-old to miss around a month of action.

Hogan, who has scored only once since joining in a £12million move from Brentford in January, is poised to undergo scans and an X-Ray tomorrow as Villa seek to determine the extent of the problem.

Bruce explained: “Scott will have scans and x-rays tomorrow. By the looks of the replay he’s gone over on his ankle badly.

“Considering the one he did at Newcastle it’s very similar to that, let’s hope it’s not any worse than that. We’ll not know for 48 hours.”

Villa were already without top scorer Jonathan Kodjia, who is set to miss the best part of six months after undergoing surgery on a fractured fibula.

With Gabriel Agbonlahor and Rushian Hepburn-Murphy also missing for the Brighton clash, Hogan’s exit saw Keinan Davis get the longest run-out of his professional career to date.
