Garry Thompson offers backing for Aston Villa striker Scott Hogan

Former fan favourite Garry Thompson reckons Sunday's Second City derby offers Scott Hogan the ideal chance to kick-start his Villa career.

With top scorer Jonathan Kodjia suspended, Hogan is set to start up front for Villa as they hunt a win which would leave their city rivals in dire relegation danger.

The 25-year-old has scored just once in 10 appearances since joining in a £12million January move from Brentford but Thompson believes Sunday's showdown could be his chance to shine.

"It's a great opportunity for him," said Thompson. "The lad has scored 16 goals this season so he clearly knows where the back of the net is.

"At the moment you feel things haven't quite fallen for him. He had an injury which didn't help either.

"I think he will score goals given time. Scoring in a game like the derby could be just what he needs to rebuild that bit of confidence."
