Garry Thompson reckons a good festive period could be vital to Villa's promotion hopes.

Today's visit of Burton Albion to Villa Park is the first of three games in eight days for Steve Bruce's team, who currently sit 13th in the Championship, six points adrift of the top six.

Thompson, who was part of the last Villa team to win promotion in 1988, believes a good run of results over the next week can help build momentum for the second half of the campaign.

"You want to make sure you have a good Christmas," he said. "I know people have said Villa haven't played particularly well recently, yet it is not like they are a million miles away. All it will take is a few wins and they will be right up there.

"If you can get some good results in these games it can really set you up for the second half of the season and give you some momentum."

Bruce is set to be active during the January transfer window as he aims to strengthen the squad for the final months of the campaign.

Villa are close to agreeing a loan deal for Manchester United goalkeeper Sam Johnstone and are also in the hunt for Arsenal right-back Carl Jenkinson.

Thompson believes central midfield is also an area the manager will be keen to address.

"I think they could do with some more legs in central midfield and it would great if they could get someone creative to play behind the frontmen," he added.

"I've got faith in Steve Bruce. He has been in this situation so many times before and I'm sure he will know what is needed."

The rest of Villa's festive fixtures see them host Leeds on Thursday night, before travelling to Cardiff City next Monday.
