The 24-year-old has put pen-to-paper on a new, improved contract which will keep him at the club until 2020.

For Gardner, it is reward for a year in which he has made more appearances than any other.

A product of Villa's academy who was once a target for Inter Milan, Gardner has battled back from two serious knee injuries which threatened to end his career before it had begun.

But after spending the second half of last season on loan at Nottingham Forest, he has gone on to make 14 appearances for Villa this term, scoring his first goal for the club in the 1-1 derby draw with Blues.
