The club legend, who has enjoyed success at Villa Park as both player and manager, will be part of the new 'football board' which will be headed up by David Bernstein and Mervyn King.

Though the exact specifics of his role are yet to be determined, Little has promised to do all he can to help put the club back on track after a season which is almost certain to end in relegation from the Premier League.

"There is a challenge here for me," he said. "It is a challenge I'm really, really up for and it's a challenge which, whatever advice I have, I hope will be good advice. I'll try very hard to make sure that is the case."

Little, who led Villa to victory in the League Cup final 20 years ago today, went on: "I will give an opinion. Anyone who knows me knows that I am not a loud person. But you don't have to be loud to have an opinion on things and be heard."
