Andreas Weimann: I was ready to leave Villa

Striker Andreas Weimann believes the change will "do him good" after ending his long association with Aston Villa to join Derby County.

The Rams completed a £2.75million deal to sign the 23-year-old Austrian international last night, dropping him into the Championship.

It's the first of several anticipated departures from Villa Park over the summer, as boss Tim Sherwood continues his overhaul of the squad.

Weimann was tipped for big things two years ago, after breaking through to the first-team and scoring 12 goals in the 2012-13 campaign.

But he has managed to find the net just 10 times in the past two years and quickly fell out of favour following Sherwood's arrival in February.

Weimann said: "I'm looking forward to the new challenge. The opportunity to play first-team football and drive the team to promotion is something that I want to do.

"I was at Villa for eight years so I'm looking forward to this new stage in my career, although it will be a bit strange not being there.

"Eight years is a long time, especially in football, so maybe a change will do me good and get me started again."
