The 54-year-old started another stint with the claret and blues this morning, nearly three years after ending a 17-year association.

The Scot arrived as part of Brian Little's coaching staff in 1995 and left when Paul Lambert, who was sacked two weeks ago, was appointed boss.

New manager Tim Sherwood has turned to the club stalwart, who was in caretaker charge at the start of 2010-11 season when Martin O'Neill left, as his right-hand man.

MacDonald takes up the position after resigning from his post at Championship side Nottingham Forest, where he was working as a youth coach.
